The Downtown IC Gallery Walk!

my artwork will be featured in the downtown iowa city gallery walk this spring! it's the same series that was hanging at Terrapin at the end of last year, but in a new location.

i hang the show march 5th at Bella Joli downtown in the ped mall. and on friday, March 6th from 5pm-8pm i will be at that location meeting and greeting those who pass through the door to take a look at my art. there will be champagne, wine and cheese and this event is open to the public. there are also several other locations downtown all within walking distance of one another that will be displaying art of all sorts by other local and regional artists. be sure to check it out! it's a fun event!

this will be a great opportunity for me to interact with the public and talk about my art and hopefully align myself with some potential buyers. the art will be up for display through the end of May 2009. this is a very exciting opportunity for my art career! wish me luck! :)

last year i worked a freelance gig for earth day. i coordinated the Chase Bank volunteers on Randall's Island and helped compost all of the new plants that were planted that spring.

almost a year later, i get an email from Green Apple Festival asking permission to use a photo that i had taken during the event. i ended up negotiating my first photo license agreement and got paid for it's use. that's my photo on the left. it will be used to promote this years events online and in print! this is off their website, www.greenapplemusicfestival.com.

tonight was my first night of teaching digital photography at the local rec center! it had been a decade since i've taught photography and when i did, it was all film and darkroom skills. i absolutely love teaching. it's very rewarding and it keeps me focused on learning myself. in this business, there is always something new to learn and share. teaching makes me very happy! :)

my dad has helped organize the luminaries in coralville every year for the past 20 years. KGAN decided to brave the ice storm that night and head down to coralville to shoot some last minute interview footage from my dad about the event. i had to document!
the interview footage never made it on air, but it was nice having a cute and friendly news reporter over for a few minutes. :)

About The Daily Palette

The Daily Palette's goal is to heighten interest, awareness and appreciation of the visual arts and writing through recognizing the efforts of Iowa-identified artists and communities. The project has for over two years provided a means for the public to view a diverse range of artwork through the display of images, texts, and streaming video. The project began in conjunction with the Year of the Arts & Humanities in 2004-2005, when a team from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences School of Art & Art History Intermedia Area developed The Daily Palette to combine Intermedia's art & technology research with a broad public information effort.

What a difference a PRO lab print makes. I was disappointed to learn that there are no local PRO labs here in Iowa City. I needed a small print for a sale that was made on my Etsy shop and didn't want to make an order from my NYC vendor for just one print. So I tried out University Camera in downtown Iowa City. What a disappointment! They charge more than a drugstore print, but what I got back was a drugstore quality print. The image was super contrasty and looked nothing like my original digital image that I had uploaded to their kiosk. The paper was flimsy and had no texture and made the image look flat and blah. Even though I still needed to make an order with my old lab and wait a week for the print, I was happy to wait. My clients deserve quality and I personally wouldn't settle for anything less.

I make frequent trips to Cedar Falls, Iowa to visit my pal Emily. When she found out her local coffeeshop, Cup Of Joe, was hosting a silent art auction to raise money for the Iowa Woman's Foundation she thought of me and asked me to contribute. I was happy to donate "Lonely Is Lovely" to her local Cedar Valley chapter, Chics For Change.

Along with several other local artists, the piece was hung at Cup Of Joe on October 5th. So far it has generated two bids with the highest bid at $120! On December 1st, there will be a reception at Cup Of Joe to close out the silent auction and to give the artists an opportunity to meet the new owners of their donated art pieces! I am thrilled to be a part of this process and to be able to contribute my art for a good cause!

this is so cool! my first day back in iowa after a brutal move and being sick on top of it, i was so excited to learn that i was chosen, not by one, but two etsy artists to be included in their treasury selection! this opens the window for me to be featured on the FRONT page of etsy.com!!! and i only found out about this feature from my amazing and talented artist friend and mentor, amber maida a couple weeks ago! i am thrilled and honored to be hand picked by my fellow etsy shop peers!

so i guess tubing took a bit of a toll on my body. i did fly up off the tube a few times after crashing into some waves from the wake. but i don't remember experiencing too much pain. i guess i was too focused on hanging on to the rope for dear life!
i discovered this doozy had grown in size pretty rapidly since sunday. it wasn't this red until i got off the plane on monday night. and to top it off, i have one to match on my arm and on my breast.

it's pretty nasty looking, eh?
yeah, that's what i thought.

in the past two months i have flown from nyc to iowa round-trip three times. that's 6 plane rides as i have to make connections each time.
but this particular flight was really special. this would be the last time i flew into nyc while i still called it home. i've got one more month in nyc before packing up and motoring back to iowa for a new beginning.
and lucky me...we rolled into town right at dusk. i got to enjoy amazing skylines of the city with a summer sunset.

so very bittersweet.

i had the best day under the sun!
it had been ages since i had done anything like this! when i was in college i was at the rez all summer long. boating, water skiing, swimming and soaking up the rays.

i'm such a water rat. i was at the coralville pool right before this. the very same pool i spent my summer days at as a child. i would spend so much time in the pool as a kid my bleach blond hair would turn green. good times!

these two guys are so much fun!
baby-sitting in iowa is so different. it's so nice to be able to take the kids out in the backyard and fill up a wading pool on a summer evening and let them go wild.

my childhood friend and classmate, bridget, was in town and i was able to meet her two girls, violet and stella, for the first time.
stella really wanted her picture taken in the photobooth at the mall...so we plugged in three dollars worth of quarters and nothing happened.
so i pulled out my camera while we were stuffed in like sardines and took 4 continuous shots....

i've been living the transient lifestyle in nyc for over 6 years....
in may of this year i decided after witnessing my brother's home search here in iowa (his budget was $125, 000-135,000) that i was really getting sick of chasing my tail in nyc and having nothing to show for it!
approaching 33...my priorities have changed. i want space, nature, to be closer to my family, to have my own place for the first time...to feel fully expressed! i know i DON'T want to raise kids in the city...and someday soon i would like to find that magical someone who will want to have children with me and be a loving nurturing supportive force in my life. not too much to ask for, i think.
so i made the decision to return HOME. i never thought i would say it, but my frequent visits back home during times of the year other than winter (xmas time)...really helped me shift my perspective on what IOWA has to offer. sure...there aren't as many opportunities here as in NYC...BUT...i know i will be healthier here, more sane and be able to take care of my self in ways that i was limited by in NYC.
i'll be here for a nice visit till the 25th...then i head back to brooklyn for one more month before i officlally trek cross country with my dad and a mini van full of my stuff on september 29th.

so here's my way of documenting my journey home. this is not 365 round two...this is my own spin off....
for the next year i will document, record, discover and explore my journey home...back to my roots....self recorded.

i got a last minute gig to assist on a shoot with architectual photographer, Bilyana Dimitrova, today. i was more or less her 2nd assistant for the day. Bilyana was shooting an east side apartment near midtown on the 25th floor. the apartment had amazing views on two different decks. we did a lot of sitting around, waiting for light to shift, dusk to come. i basically ran errands and helped move furniture and props around. everyone there was amazing. super wonderful people to work with. and did i mention how kick ass it was to work with a successful WOMAN photographer?!?! Bilyana is so down to earth. i learned a great deal. it was a great opportunity. i'd say architectual photography is up there on my list of favorite things to shoot. it was a treat and an honor to work with Bilyana. it will be one of my more memorable new york experiences.

Scott was passing through NYC for a few days. we had a nice photowalk through red hook. it was the eve of the big ikea opening in brooklyn. i wanted to check it out and investigate who would be waiting in line already. there were a few doing so. weirdos.

but the real cool part was exploring the revamped waterfront. ikea put a really cool park together down there. if you don't shop at ikea, at least check out the erie basin park. good times.

i just wanted you to get the vibe at Henry's.

hands down the best bagels in my hood. they make everything in-house. the tuna salad is so delish! not to mention the coffee. they even have soy milk! yeah for me! for those of you who are familiar with carroll gardens, it used to be 'everything bagel.' it's since gone under new ownership and they have done a wonderful job of revamping the place! it's got a lot more class with an easygoing attitude. i'm so excited to have my shots hanging there! the staff and owners are all super friendly. it's a great place to eat, be leisure and enjoy this gorgeous weather! all the windows open up and it feels like you are sitting outside.

Photo weekend in DC

this past weekend i headed down to DC for 48 hours to visit some photo friends of mine that i met on flickr, Mike and Scott. besides having a lot of laughs and photo fun (being the true photo geeks that we are,) their friend Mireille was doing a sociology project about photography. mike and i were her specimens. she periodically interviewed mike and i and filmed us roaming around Georgetown while we took pictures. she studied our process, how we interacted with people, what we shot, how we shot it and how we all interacted as a posse of photogs roaming on the street together.
it was interesting being a part of the process. i'll be interested in seeing the finished project.
she also asked us to choose 5 photos that showed our range, style and abilities, which i had a really hard time doing. how do you sum up all of what i do in 5 photos? i did my best!

Adventures In Product Photography

Today I took a field trip into the city to speak with the staff photographer for a major make-up company based here in NYC. I wanted to gain some insight on this job position and see if it was for me. After spending a good hour with Bryan and some of the companies creative team, I was able to get a taste of what the daily grind might look like. All of the people there were great! I really enjoyed the vibe there, but I don't think the corporate world is for me. But I certainly have an appreciation for what those guys do over there to make it all happen. I don't think I will look at a perfume ad the same way again.
I'm going to keep exploring my options.
I think I am most comfortable in a photo studio.

ICP with Kramer!

Hilary and I went the open house for the International Center of Photography last night. Just to check it out and see what it was all about.
We got a tour of the school and were a able to check out all the resources they have available for students. Computers, printers, darkrooms, labs, classrooms, library. Quite impressive for a one building school. They had the latest of everything and over 17,000 books all on photography in their library.
We also interacted with some of the faculty and watched a slide show presentation of photos from past and current students. All of which was very impressive and inspiring!
The crazy part was that I knew one of the students that they featured in the slide show. They showed her photos of a project she did in Africa, but they also mentioned the other project she had done about a family going through divorce. I baby-sat for that family and I watched her create that project and was even in a few of her final shots since I was a huge part of the childrens lives at that place and time. It was a fun coincidence!
The other cool part was Michael Richards aka Kramer from Seinfeld showed up for the open house! I was beside myself! He's so tall and sticks out just like you think he would. I'm such a sucker for celebrities! I really wanted to ask him if he would take a picture with me, but I chickened out. For the most part, I have always respected famous people in NYC. This is their home and they deserve their space. But man, do I wish I had jumped in there and asked for a snapshot! He took a tour along with us and sat through the slide show and even cracked a few jokes during a discussion of some of the photos. I guess he had to make it known that a comedian was in the room. ;) I also sat two rows in front of him and noticed him taking shots of the slideshow with his iphone. I wonder where his interest lies with photography?!?
Well, if I sign up for a class, maybe we will be bumping into each other in the darkroom. :)

I shot these photos after we left the ICP open house. This area near Bryant Park is exploding! These buildings were not there two years ago. NYC's landscape is constantly transforming! It always still amazes me!

i love this website that sends you old photos from your flickr account. since i've been on flickr for over 2 years now and have over 13,000 photos uploaded, it's kinda cool to see what i was up to a year ago!

a new earth

when i found out that oprah was having a free online course based on the book 'a new earth' by eckhart tolle, i had to join in.

many years ago, my healer told me that if she could only have ONE book in her spiritual library, it would be 'the power of now' by eckart tolle. she believed that if you could practice what was talked about in his book, you would experience who we really are....our true essence. our awakening would lead to our spiritual enlightenment. of course i immediately bought it and tried to dive in. but i'll admit, the book was really hard to comprehend and digest. really heavy deep thinking reading. a lot to digest and process. i never did more then skim paragraphs and jump around the chapters in the book.
that was three years ago.

since then, i have still been on a quest for spiritual growth and awareness. and my road to enlightenment has expanded in miraculous ways. i picked up 'a new earth' with a fresh mind and was eager to see what this book was all about.

i found 'a new earth' much easier to read than the 'power of now.' it requires thinking and processing, but i think the time was right for me to read this book. everything i read applied to my life. it gave me understanding and awareness to what i was creating and the dysfunction of my mind. i have already noticed a shift in my awareness. especially on how the ego has such a grip on us all. i am grateful that i am taking the time to further my awareness of the suffering that i create for myself. and that in every moment it just takes a shift in my perception to bring peace into my life. i understand who i really am and i want to expand that. i am finding more time and space to listen to my inner wisdom. and i am grateful for each breath. life is full of beauty, wonder and awe. that's what i want to be in touch with everyday.

a way to practice tapping into the depth and mystery that lies within all of us....

spend some time in the presence of something you consider beautiful—a flower, a gem, a piece of artwork, etc. as you look at the object, try to see it without naming it mentally. when we appreciate beauty in this manner, a window opens into the formless, and into a state of gratitude. see if you can experience that. write your experiences here.

i started to appreciate it, notice it, all of it. it's cracks it's markings. then i started to see it's depth, it's layers. i held it to the light and inside i could see the universe. pools of colors that you could not see from the outside. it glowed. it had markings and expansion and growth. the depth kept growing. i could see what made this stone up. and it was all beautiful.

i attended the fcw society's 3rd year anniversary tonight and had a lovely time with the ladies. i've been a member for 2 years now. great network of powerful vibrate woman doing their own thing in nyc! you can check out the society's blog here.

day 365 'dreaming wide awake'

MY LAST DAY! HOORAY!
wow. i made it. a full year of self-portraits.
oh my. i had no idea what i was getting myself into. ;)
but i’m thankful for the journey none the less. that's for sure!

looking through all of my shots from this past year, i can definitely tell that i have grown as a photographer. picking up the camera everyday forces you to get creative (unless you want all your shots to look the same- BORING!) and figure out how to use your camera in new and interesting ways! i have fully pushed my sweet canon point-and-shoot as far as it can be pushed. it's time to get my hands on a DSLR!

as i got deeper into the project i started to alter my shots slightly using iphoto. but most of my shots are straight out of the camera. i'm not a photoshop wizard, nor do i aspire to be one. i don't even know how to use the beast. instead my focus was about making the shot right before i clicked. it also meant taking a lot of shots until i got what i wanted. i also relied heavily upon natural or found light, no studio equipment here. not even a tripod. i borrowed a friend’s gorillapod for a few shots, but other than that, i used things around me to steady or hold my camera while I stepped in front of the lens.

as i grew more confident as a photographer, all sorts of opportunities started to come my way, including two art shows in nyc! showing and selling my art in nyc is a dream come true! i am very grateful for all the people who have been there for me and have supported me along my journey. thank you thank you thank you!!! and a special thank you to ms. contini. if it weren’t for her, i wouldn't be showing my artwork in nyc! thank you, my dear!

and of course, how could I not mention ALL OF YOU!
through the year i made many more flickr contacts and even met several flickrites in person! thanks to flickr, i have been able to connect with other photographers from all over the world who have inspired me and taught me something new! THANK YOU!

and a big huge THANK YOU plus many many thanks to all of you out there who have followed this experience of mine and have left comments and favorites! i appreciate all your kind words and encouragement! thank you for all the love and support! thank you.

and a special thank you to hilary mchone, the woman who inspired me to do the project. if it wasn’t for her brilliant, witty, fresh, funny, original and creative 365 set (that i randomly found on flickr through another contact) i might not have taken the plunge. thanks for your wonderful friendship hilabean!

....so I guess that’s a wrap folks! i feel like i've just given birth and it's time to set my baby free! the reality tv plug has been pulled!

although, i will have a day 366…since leap day decided to squeak in my year cycle just before I finished. :)

and just in case you were wondering…the answer is no. no ‘year two’ for me. of course random self-portraits will pop up on my stream from time to time, but at least i won't be chained to it! ha!

i have to give props to my gal pal lizzy.
she shot this while we were playing on her roof in hoboken during the crazy storm.

i was pretty sick sunday night going into monday. i didn't get to enjoy the fluke spring...but had a lot of fun capturing the storm on the roof. spent most of my day drinking plenty of fluids and lounging. it was nice to get outside for this moment.
